How to take the perfect Instagram picture

What makes a picture perfect for Instagram and do you need a professional photographer or even a team to be successful on Instagram and to make the perfect picture? No, to the last two questions. I would never say that my pictures are perfect or that I know everything. I certainly don’t and I am constantly learning from other amazing bloggers out there.

However since you guys ask my quite a lot about my Instagram pictures and which camera you should use and how to edit the pictures I wrote a little guide. The best part? Three of my favorite Instagram stars gave me their photography tips for this blog post. Check out her answers at the bottom of this article.

Details matter

If you really want to stand out, pay attention to every detail. The devil truly is in the detail. Make sure that:
–    there is no other person in the picture
–    no weird hair is peeking out
–    your outfit is on point (no bra-stripes peeking out and the most important body parts are covered)
–    your feet are not cropped off

Resources

Which camera should you use? Most of my pictures are taken with my Nikon D3400 it’s a perfect camera for beginners. I had no idea about photography when I first started my travel blog so I mostly used my iPhone but the quality wasn’t good enough for my blog that’s why I changed to my Nikon. The camera is also not too heavy and the auto settings are very good to begin with.

If you want to take a picture while you are moving I really suggest using the Nikon instead of your phone because the picture will just turn out blurry. And who doesn’t want an amazing picture like this ☺ from @mvandersluis

Looking for that perfect underwater shot? I still haven’t nailed it so better to not show  my terrible experiments with that. This is the next thing I am working on: Mermaid shots.

With a underwater dome and a Go Pro you can create beautiful underwater shots.

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative a friend of mine suggested the iPhone cover from Hitcase might be a good option for you. It is water proof and you can also add a wide angle lense. You can order it here

Light

If you have a great editing tool you can make a normal picture a cool picture, but you can never make a bad picture a great picture. If you have a picture that is over exposed it is way harder to edit it than a darker picture. If you take your pictures in the mornings or late afternoon the light is much better than in  bright afternoons. Also, make sure that you don’t have any shadows on your face especially under your eyes. Again zoom in with your camera to double check.

Outfit

Find your perfect Instagram dress 🙂 Red or yellow long dresses, which are not too tight and make you like look like a princess are doing well on Instagram. Like this amazing picture from @wanderlust.wantana

Check out these two dresses from my favorite brand. Yellow Dress here: Sheena Dress & Red Dress here: Koa Dress.

If that’s too extreme for you I suggest you have always some Instagram essentials with you. This will upgrade a picture instantly.

Essentials to upgrade your picture

A cute straw hat makes every picture look better. I love this cute picture from @thetrinitraveller

You can get cool sunglasses online here and the straw hat here.

Take a lot of pictures

The first rule for getting one good picture is to make many many pictures. Because usually nine out of ten pictures suck or sometimes ten pictures suck so do ten more. Also, start making pictures while you are getting in a pose or just laughing  sometimes these pictures are the funniest. This is actually the newest Instagram trend. Check out this article.

Editing

If you have a great picture and just need to add some simple editing I like the app Snapseed. It even has a tool that gets rid of an unwanted person in your picture. Although it’s obviously not as good as photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop was always a bit too tricky for me or in other words, I was too lazy to learn. I am a huge fan of Adobe Lightroom I edit all my pictures in Lightroom. You can work with presets and make sure your pictures are all edited in the same style which will give your feed it’s own signature and unique style. I am personally in love with the presets from Mel Vandersluis you can get them here.

Tips from the pros

Here are some great inputs from my favorite travel bloggers and Instagram stars. 🙂

Inputs from Mel

Her account melvandersluis is just pure magic and a daily inspiration for me.

What does it take in your eyes for a picture to be the perfect Instagram picture?

A great depth of field, a great view and punches of colour. For example, being on top of a mountain and having the picture take far behind you will allow people to see the scope of where you’re standing. Having colourful flowers in the background will add fun colour to your feed and holding something in front of you in focus while the busy background is blurred out make the photo mysterious and interesting!

Who is taking most of your pictures?

My best friend takes most of my photos as she’s also a content creator. But I also work with other content creators and photographers especially when I travel solo, I’ll meet up with people I’ve connected with on Instagram.

Who is taking most of your pictures?

Purchase a tripod and use a self timer on your camera. There are also remotes you can purchase instead of the self timer if your camera doesn’t have that function.

What does it take in your eyes for a picture to be the perfect Instagram picture?

There’s no general rule as to what is the perfect Instagram picture as we all have different styles and travel to different places. Overall, I think it’s important to focus on location, framing and lighting as these are the things you can’t really modify after. Editing helps but you don’t want to over edit your photos so as to lose the natural effect.

Who takes most of my pictures

Mostly my boyfriend as we travel a lot together but it also happens that it could be my friends and family that take the photos of me – it really depends on who I’m with at that particular moment.

Tips for solo travelers

I rarely travel solo but on occasions when I’m alone or when I want a really clear shot I find that using a tripod is the best option. I have a connected feature with my camera that allows me to take pictures form a distance with my phone. Most of the times when you ask a stranger to take a picture they will cut your feet or something else important which ruins the framing so not always very reliable…

What does it take in your eyes for a picture to be the perfect Instagram picture?
There are so many elements in designing the perfect shot but as a travel bloggers, you have limited time in setting it up just right so I would ensure that the photo you are taking is going to captivate your audience by making them wish they could be there. Best ways to do this is to:
a. Get a shot with lots going on in the scenery to get the sky and nature/flowers
b. Set yourself in the middle of the shot – either looking at the camera and smiling as if it the bets day of your life or looking into the distance. This helps your viewers imagine that they can be you!
c. Make sure the photo is Portrait! Not Landscape – this help in engagement!
d. Edit your photos using Adobe Lightroom to brighten the shot or make those colours pop depending on your theme!

Who is taking most of your pictures?
A few times I have collaborated with photographers and had greta experiences but recently I designed my own Instagram theme and love to edit my own photos on Adobe Lightroom so I am literally just asking anyone whom is around me in the spot where I randomly decide to take my photo! I also have the help of some great friends and my amazing boyfriend 🙂

Do you have any tips for solotravelers? How can they take a good picture?

I have never tried solo so I probably not the best to ask for advice but I absolutely recommend making a friend that you can trust while travelling and asking them to take your photo for you. All you have to do is take a test shot of what you would like your image to be, show them and tell them where you would like to be placed in the photo and hand over that camera!Instagram Picture Trini
