If you are looking for an authentic Bali cooking school – look no longer. Tresna Bali Cooking School is the place to go.
It took me quite a while to find a Bali cooking school I like. Either you had to do the cooking for too long in a hot room with an environment that makes my stomach upset only thinking about it, or it was not authentic, or it was more like show cooking. With Tresna Bali cooking School I finally found the perfect place and I will go back for sure.
They are located in Ubud and surrounded by the jungle where they grow their own herbs, have their own coconut palms and even an outdoor cooking area.
Most important for me though during the hot days: the cooking is inside in a fantastic kitchen and everything was super clean. Seriously my own kitchen got jealous.
Before we started cooking Adi, the Balinese owner, showed us their own organic garden next to a river, where we learned about herbs and picked some for our cooking later. Pure Bali Bliss.
After the garden tour we started by chopping the herbs and the veggies. Usually, this would take hours considering how many dishes we were going to prepare, but here comes the fun part: there were five amazing helpers (Tresna Bali Cooking School staff) who acted as our super elf’s and helped us chopping everything. I wish it was like that at home lol.
During preparation, Adi would tell us not only about Balinese food, but also about their traditions and himself and his journey. Did you know that Balinese people usually don’t eat together, sitting at a table for hours? Their main event is the preparing. Normally the women (but for ceremonies also the men) prepare the food for the whole day together and just leave it in a pot in the kitchen. Then whoever is hungry can grab the food. I love sitting together with friends and eating at a table and talk. With Tresna Bali Cooking Class you have both. 🙂 We cooked together and we ate together.
The food smelled so good, but I must admit I was a little worried because my stomach is a bit sensitive (ok a lot), but because everything was so fresh and we could choose how spicy we wanted things to be and literally put every ingredient together ourselves – my stomach was fine. More than that, It was AMAZING. I can honestly say this is the best Balinese food I have ever tasted.
My favorite dish was the fish in the banana leafs and I also loved the green omelets for dessert. Well, I loved everything.
